New technologies feed optimism within Alzheimer research

In the USA, Alzheimer research funding has skyrocketed in recent years. Dozens of drugs are being tested and hundreds of open clinical trials related to Alzheimer’s are underway. Despite this, Alzheimer’s research is set against a bleak backdrop, as clinical trials register a 99% failure rate. However, as technological innovations are developed, research can be revisited with more accurate tools. For example, brain imaging has shown that the beta-amyloid protein is detectable 15 to 20 years before other symptoms appear, meaning that some treatments could begin much earlier.
